Personal Safety

Personal safety is a topic that concerns many of us. People often think of personal safety as being predominantly about issues such as keeping yourself safe when returning from a night out, but there are lots of other types of personal safety situations that you need to be aware of.

Violence is not as prevalent as the media might suggest. Statistically you are still more likely to be subject of violence from someone you know than from a stranger on the street. Personal Safety is not just an issue for women - evidence suggests that 'stranger' violence affects men more than women.

In addition to the work of the Police, there are many things you can do yourself to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime. Fear of attack is often far greater than the actual risk, but there are simple measures which everyone can take to help protect themselves. Make yourself aware and responsible for your personal safety - keep yourself safe.

In 1986 Suzy Lamplugh, a 25 year old estate agent disappeared after she went to meet an unknown client. So far her body has not been found. However, she has been presumed murdered and legally declared dead.

Her parents, Paul and Diana Lamplugh, believed that Suzy, like most people at that time - and even now - was simply unaware of the possible dangers that individuals can face in society. Their website provides useful tips on a variety of Personal Safety topics.

Stockton Crime Prevention Panel have given over 250 personal safety alarms to individuals, this year alone, many thousands have been provided following personal safety awareness training to various groups such as the elderley, lone workers and womens groups. This is an ongoing project that will continue.
