The Stockton Town Pastors Scheme was set up at the beginning of December 2009. Between 50 and 60 volunteers patrol Stockton High Street on a Friday and Saturday night.

Stockton Town Pastors are an association of people of all ages who have got together to offer our community in Stockton a caring presence at times when individuals may become unexpectedly vulnerable.

Their motivation as a Christian project is to bring God's love to all people, and this scheme extends a warm welcome to applicants not only from churches but to those who share our concerns and values and are willing to undergo training.

 

Their aim is to make a contribution to the safety and well-being of their fellow citizens; to befriend the community and to help those who find themselves marginalised and vulnerable.

  

They put their energies into building good relationships with all who are 'out on the town' enjoying themselves on Friday and Saturday evenings. They also liaise with pubs, clubs and restaurants in the town centre area; as well as taxi drivers, the police and and a variety of Stockton Borough Council services.

 

A coffee shop in the hall of Stockton Parish Church, located on the High Street at the junction with Church  Road, is open during the hours that Stockton Town Pastors are on duty (9pm to 3am Fridays and Saturdays) and anyone is welcome to visit for light refreshments and a chat.

 

They also carry out some practical tasks such as clearing broken glass and collecting any bottles on the ground; offering flip-flops to folk who have lost their shoes and helping others to get attention for minor injuries.

They work very close to the Police and are giving a full briefing prior to going out, this has now turned into a very good working relationship. The scheme is continuing to grow and is becoming more and more effective.

A reduction in violence has also been seen, although cannott be directly accredited to the Street Pastors their invaluable contribution is certainly a factor. The Panel have donated money to assist the scheme.
